5 years after "We-can-do-it": The tricky cultural differences …

Whoever is in contact with refugees, whether professional, voluntary or privately, can surely share one experience: The occasional stumble upon cultural differences.

This is what the author Brigitte Heidebrecht wrote about in her book. She is volunteering in the refugee aid since 2015. In short, concise stories she provides detailed and surprising insights in what perplexes refugee aid workers, German teachers and social workers. Her two main topics are: the different experience of time and the different understanding of gender roles. Whoever is annoyed by getting stood up at an appointment finds sensitive analyses and explanation approaches worth to considering. Those who sometimes tear their hair out because of the image of women among male refugees will get intimate insights into the thinking and feeling worlds of young Muslims in these stories.

With empathy and humor, the author illuminates the gradual inner arrival of refugees in our society - and her own learning process in intercultural understanding. The resulting texts get under your skin, question what is taken for granted, and shed light on existential issues - global challenges reflected in everyday life. About the author: Brigitte Heidebrecht has published a number of widely read volumes of poetry and prose since the 1980s. Today she lives as a dance teacher and consultant (mediator, supervisor and coach) in Ludwigsburg.
