We live in these streets, cross them on our way through the city or hear about them in the press. First and foremost, street names provide us with orientation, and in everyday life we usually hardly concern ourselves with what else these names are about.

In the city of Ulm, too, naming serves the purpose of honouring or remembering certain people and events from history. So it is obvious that traces from the NS regime and the history of German colonial rule are reflected in the street scene.

In the recent past, the topic of naming and renaming streets has also gained momentum in Ulm. This was evident, for example, this year in March in the Green Youth's demand for the renaming of Hermann Stehr-Weg at Eselsberg, or the recently published website of Kollektiv Ulm-Raum with two interactive maps.

However, discussions about street names have not only been a topic in Ulm since this year, but go back decades. We want to continue this discussion this year.

We want to discuss with people affected by racism, activists, citizens, people from the city of Ulm and politicians from the street naming working group:
Who is remembered?
How do we deal with NS and post-colonial street names in Ulm?
What are the opportunities and challenges when we decide to rename streets?
What is an appropriate perspective in view of the recurring desire for renaming from society?

We will conclude the discussion with questions and comments from the audience. Citizens and residents are welcome to participate.
