Until recently, Ukraine was a popular study destination for around 60.000 international students, many of them from countries on the African continent such as Morocco and Nigeria. For many students, the reason for deciding to study in Ukraine was the political situation and, for them, unaffordable tuition fees in their countries of origin. Fleeing the war, Black and PoC students were often confronted with racism. Whether they are now allowed to continue their studies in Germany or another member state of the European Union is still more than uncertain.

In Munich, an active network has been supporting around 30 African students who fled Ukraine because of the war since March 2022. What is their current situation? Will they have the chance to continue their academic careers here? How far does solidarity with refugees from Ukraine go? What do the contacts that have emerged in the course of the project in recent weeks mean for the Afro-German movement in Germany?
